SCOTT CHAMBERLIN
Integrated Design, Writing, & Project Management
Scott Chamberlin is a writer, editor, designer, project manager — “a walking publications department.” He can envision publications from scratch, create and pitch comps, take care of production across the Adobe design suite, do a definitive copy-edit hewing tightly to a style guide, and otherwise do whatever it takes to get a beautiful mission-serving publication into its reader’s hands. He’s equally happy working solo or within and learning from a team. Samples of various forms of publication are available below, and many others can be provided upon request.
BLOG: "the mitigaptationist"
“the mitigaptationist” is a hybrid professional/personal blog about living with climage change, told from the perspective of a development professional and climate science layperson. It’s presented here as an example of longform writing. (Full scrolling version.)

WEBSITE SAMPLE — wholechild.org (2014-2019)
Scott Chamberlin designed, wrote, and championed wholechild.org, the website of Whole Child International, from 2014-2019. The WordPress site deployed a dynamic balance of image, video, and text to introduce Whole Child’s complicated work to varied audiences.
The organization’s current website is not related to that site. For PDF examples please click: “Vision” and “Our Program.” It’s a good example of integrated writing and design, and more samples can be provided upon request.

TEXTBOOK DESIGN, EDITING, and PROJECT MANAGEMENT SAMPLE: "Developing the Whole Child"
Whole Child International’s didactic materials have been a multi-year labor of love. Shown is the cover design for the English-language first edition of the university course reader, “Developing the Whole Child,” a textbook now being adapted for roll-out in multiple countries and languages. (This is the look-and-feel Scott Chamberlin gave most of Whole Child’s teaching materials.)

BLOG SAMPLE: "Notes from the Field" blog (2005-2019)
Download a PDF of selected “Notes from the Field” produced for Whole Child International (2005-2019). Aimed at a specific readership, Whole Child’s blog maintained the same consistent, measured tone for 14 years: “accessible and cautiously enthusiastic.”
The organization has not maintained these legacy blog posts. Please click here to download a PDF of samples.

STUDY GUIDES
Following up five years writing and project-managing interactive educational and historical materials for Steven Spielberg’s Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, Scott Chamberlin wrote two study guides to help educators teach with two Academy-Award-winning documentary films, which are still in use today:

POSTERS & BANNERS
Scott Chamberlin has designed countless banners. posters, and other promotional materials for IndieCade: the International Festival of Independent Games, and other orgs. Samples are available upon request. (Shown above — example of a fundraising event poster using a Scott Chamberlin photograph and design.)

DIRECT MAIL SAMPLE: Six-panel self-mailing mailer
This sophisticated 2010 mailer presented the inter-related facets of the wonderful work of Santa Monica Baykeeper (now Los Angeles Waterkeeper). The brochure presents the work in a series of facing text panels and full-bleed photographs tell the organization’s story as the reader opens one fold after another. This was taken from idea to mail by Scott Chamberlin. (Click here to explore the panels in greater detail.)

MISSION-ORIENTED ONESHEET SAMPLES: Accessible communications to orient teams and constituencies
There’s nothing like a well-built onesheet (two pages, one sheet) to organize critical information for easy digesting by a specific constituency — for instance, a team that’s being onboarded, new board members, or donors being approached for a very specific project. The onesheet PDFs available here and here combine an infographic aesthetic with the intention of imparting a significant amount of information.

MORE SAMPLE BROCHURES
More traditional collateral both designed has included the original 2005 brochure (pictured) for Whole Child International in addition to:
- “Soft-sell” fundraising brochure – Whole Child International (combines pictographic storytelling and infographic detail)
- Traditional tabling trifold – Santa Monica Baykeeper
- Traditional tabling trifold – CSU-Fresno Department of Jewish Studies
(Feel free to donate to those orgs if these brochures do their job!)

TRADE HARDBACK & PAPERBACK EDITING & DESIGNING
As Editor-in-Chief of Patcheny Press, a publishing imprint created to leverage print-on-demand publishing technology for new writing, Scott Chamberlin has edited several novels and works of literary criticism, and also designed their covers and interiors. Several among these can be seen here:
- Wages of War by Fred Croton
- Death for Beginners by Chris Gerolmo
- Another America by Freed, Chamberlin, Gardner, et al.
- Whitman’s Code: A New Bible by M.C. Gardner
GRANT PROPOSALS
It’s not possible to provide examples here, but Scott Chamberlin has developed effective proposals to such diverse federal agencies as USAID, NSF, NASA, HUD, NIH, DOJ, USDA, USAID, NEH, NEA, DoD, DoEd, state and local agencies, private foundations, and corporations — often wrangling clients and other partners to meet deadline after deadline. These have contributed to tens of millions of dollars of funding for USC, CSULA, CSUN, and other universities; hospitals; NGOs; and other organizations. Samples are avialable upon request.
